Anniversary Year Events and Projects:

1887 Day – an “Open House” on Friday, June 13, 2008

Students and staff were dressed in late nineteenth century costumes; lessons, rules and activities were those that would typically have been found at the original “Eglinton School” which opened its doors in the school year 1887-1888.  Studying pioneer life is part of the Grade 3 Social Studies curriculum so our Grade 3 students (and those in Grades 4,5 and 6 who have already been through Grade 3!) contributed ideas to make this day memorable.

Mural depicting the past, present and future of the school: “OUR ROOTS AND WINGS”

We chose the theme of “Our Roots and Wings” to celebrate the fact that our school has a very long history but also a very bright future ahead of it.  The first part of the mural – located in our entrance foyer – focussed on our “Roots”.  During the 2006-2007 school year, all our students attended a presentation on the history of the school, and then contributed their pictures and stories to the project.  These were brought together in a design by artist Marsha Stonehouse, which represents key episodes in the history of the school painted on the roots of a tree.  All students contributed designs, and many painted theirs right onto the mural.

In 2008-2009, we focused on our “Wings”.  Students selected the themes that best represent the present and future of our culturally rich school.

Collecting oral histories from graduates and former staff

Our Grade 6 students developed a questionnaire for collecting oral histories from former students, staff and parents.  We were very grateful for the help of four students from Glendon College who assisted our students with this project.

Showcasing our collection of pictures

John Fisher has an impressive collection of pictures.  The collection was displayed in the hallway for visitors to the school to see their class pictures or other memorable images of the school

Setting up a proper Archive

A school with such a long history needs a proper Archive – we are working with the Board’s Archives department to catalogue and preserve all the papers and artifacts in our collection.  Stand by for updates.
